Johnstown Opens Applications for Data Center Advisory Committee

The Town of Johnstown is accepting applications from residents interested in serving on a new committee that will study data-center development and recommend possible policies to the Town Council.

The seven-member Data Center Advisory Committee will review information about data centers, consider community concerns and develop recommendations for elected officials. The committee will not approve or deny development applications, and final policy decisions will remain with the Town Council.

Johnstown residents can apply through the Town’s online questionnaire:

The Town Council created the committee on July 20 as Johnstown considers how data centers should be addressed in its land-use regulations. One Town staff member will provide administrative support, while the appointed members will be residents.

The Town says it intends to select a balanced group of residents willing to engage constructively with the issue. Committee members are expected to review information, consider different community perspectives and help develop recommendations for the Council.

The application period comes as Johnstown begins work under a temporary moratorium on new data-center facilities. The moratorium prevents the Town from accepting applications or conducting pre-submittal activities while officials study potential regulations.

The moratorium could end sooner if the Town adopts definitions, development standards and other regulations governing the facilities. The temporary pause is intended to give Johnstown time to examine issues such as water and electricity demand, infrastructure, noise, emergency-service needs and compatibility with surrounding land uses.

The initial application period is expected to remain open for about two weeks, although the Town has not announced a specific closing date. Staff will review the applications and recommend residents for appointment.

Residents interested in serving should submit the questionnaire promptly.
