WELD COUNTY — Drivers traveling through the intersection of Weld County Road 34 and Weld County Road 17 will soon see new safety changes, including additional stop signs and rumble strips.
According to Weld County Government, the intersection is currently controlled by stop signs for eastbound and westbound traffic on Weld County Road 34. Weld County commissioners recently approved adding two more stop signs for northbound and southbound traffic on Weld County Road 17, turning the intersection into a four-way stop.
Rumble strips will also be added on Weld County Road 17 as drivers approach the intersection.
Drivers can view the intersection on Google Maps.
The county said the changes are intended to reduce broadside crashes at the intersection. The Weld County Department of Public Works estimates that more than 5,600 vehicles use the intersection each day.
“We’re always looking at how we can make our roads safer,” Weld County Commissioner Pro Tem Jason Maxey said in the county announcement. “This marks the next step toward that goal at a busy intersection.”
The new stop signs and rumble strips are expected to be installed in the coming weeks. No exact installation date was provided.
Weld County Commissioner Kevin Ross, who serves as coordinator of public works, urged drivers to watch for the change and slow down as they approach the intersection.
“We want drivers to notice the new stop signs on County Road 17 and slow down when they get close to the intersection,” Ross said. “It’s one of our busier ones. This change, along with careful driving, can make a real difference.”
Public Works will continue studying the intersection. Weld County said the long-term plan is to eventually replace the four-way stop with a roundabout.
Until the work is complete, drivers should remain alert in the area and be prepared for changing traffic patterns once the new signs are installed.
