A portion of the Interstate 25 East Frontage Road near Mead will close for more than a week beginning Thursday as crews continue work on the I-25 North Express Lanes Project.
The Colorado Department of Transportation announced Sept. 29 that both directions of the East Frontage Road south of Weld County Road 32 will close at 7 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, and are scheduled to remain closed through 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9.
Crews will mill, grade, repave and stripe both lanes of the frontage road between WCR 32 and Camelot Circle. Access to nearby businesses will remain available during the closure, while detour routes and reduced speed limits will be posted in the area.
The closure is south of Johnstown and could affect Johnstown-area motorists traveling south along the I-25 corridor.
CDOT’s current traffic-impact information lists Weld County Road 9.5, Weld County Road 7 and Colorado Boulevard as alternate north-south roadways during ongoing frontage-road access restrictions. Motorists should follow posted detours for the Oct. 1–9 closure.

Part of I-25 North improvements
The closure is part of the I-25 North Express Lanes Project from Mead to Berthoud, an approximately six-mile project extending from Colorado Highway 66 in Mead north to the previously improved section of I-25 just south of Colorado Highway 56 in Berthoud.
The project includes widening I-25, adding one Express Lane in each direction and reconstructing several bridges along the corridor. CDOT says the project will connect with approximately 20 miles of I-25 improvements previously completed between Berthoud and Fort Collins.
The Mead-to-Berthoud portion of the project is currently expected to be completed in 2028. CDOT says its completion will mark the first time I-25 has more than two lanes in each direction between Denver and Fort Collins.
Construction schedules are weather- and site-dependent and may change. Motorists can check CDOT’s traffic-impact information for updates as the work progresses.
