Johnstown Approves Contract for Sunrise Park Playground Replacement

The Johnstown Town Council unanimously approved a contract with Go Play, LLC for the replacement of playground equipment at Sunrise Park during its June 1 meeting.

The contract, totaling $550,840.55, will replace playground equipment in both the north and south play areas at Sunrise Park. According to the town agenda packet, Sunrise Park was identified as the next priority for replacement because of aging, outdated equipment and frequent maintenance needs. The project is part of the town’s ongoing effort to update playgrounds with modern equipment that meets current safety and design standards.

Johnstown now has eight public parks maintained by the Public Works Department, following the recent addition of Letford Park. In recent years, playground equipment at Aragon Park, Lake Park, and Hays Park has also been replaced using equipment from Superior Recreational Products through Go Play. Town staff noted that those previous projects have been met with renewed interest from park users and that Go Play’s prior work and warranty support have been excellent.

The Sunrise Park project includes two separate playground areas. The town’s design calls for a Rustic Fort theme, with bright orange equipment intended to match the color of a sunrise, along with blue poured-in-place rubberized surfacing. The town says the design will better use both existing playground areas and provide more play options for children of different ages.

The north playground area is planned with a more linear layout and will include features such as a center tower, matrix mound climber, ADA four-seat seesaw, and team swing. The north playground proposal totals $284,704.05, including equipment, freight, poured-in-place rubber surfacing, road base installation, and equipment installation by a CPSI-certified installer.

The south playground area will include the larger centerpiece structure, described in town documents as a 21-foot-tall tower with more challenging climbing features, multiple slides, bridges, and rope play features. The south playground proposal totals $266,136.50, including equipment, freight, poured-in-place rubber surfacing, road base installation, and CPSI-certified installation.

Poured-in-place rubber surfacing will replace the existing mulch surfacing beneath the playground equipment in both areas. The surfacing specification describes a two-layer rubber-urethane playground surface designed to meet impact attenuation and accessibility standards.

The town agenda packet states that pricing for the project is through an existing competitively bid Sourcewell contract, which provides a 12 percent discount on equipment. Staff also noted that the south area equipment was being offered at an additional discount, providing more than $63,000 in savings for the proposed equipment.

Town staff recommended awarding the contract to Go Play, LLC. The approved motion authorizes the Town Manager to sign the contract associated with the Sunrise Park Playground Equipment Replacement project.

The contract is expected to run through October 31, 2026, unless otherwise terminated or extended with town approval.
