Roosevelt Football Looks to Secure Northern League Championship Against Grand Junction

JOHNSTOWN, Colo. — Roosevelt High School will have an opportunity to complete an undefeated conference season and secure the outright Class 4A Northern League football championship when the Roughriders host Grand Junction on Friday, October 30. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Randall Hess Stadium in Johnstown.

Roosevelt enters the regular-season finale with an 8–1 overall record and a perfect 6–0 mark in conference play. Grand Junction, a Class 5A program competing in the 4A Northern League, is also 8–1 overall and holds a 5–1 conference record.

The Roughriders have secured at least a share of the conference title. A victory Friday would complete a perfect 7–0 league record and give Roosevelt the outright championship.

Roosevelt Carries Eight-Game Winning Streak Into Finale

Roosevelt has won eight consecutive games since opening its season with a 35–28 loss to Mead on August 28. The Roughriders followed that defeat with victories over Pueblo West and Windsor before beginning conference play in September.

Roosevelt’s conference performance has been particularly strong. The Roughriders recorded four consecutive shutouts against Greeley West, Northridge, Poudre, and Longmont before defeating Loveland 43–14 on October 16.

The team continued its winning streak on October 23 with a 31–3 home victory over Frederick. The Golden Eagles took a 3–0 lead in the first quarter, but Roosevelt responded with 31 unanswered points.

According to Roosevelt’s schedule on MaxPreps, Roosevelt has scored 358 points through nine games while allowing just 86. That represents an average of nearly 40 points scored and fewer than 10 points allowed per game.

The Roughriders also enter Friday’s matchup with statewide recognition. In the October 27 CHSAA rankings reported by the Fort Collins Coloradoan, Roosevelt moved into the No. 1 position in Class 4A, ahead of undefeated Broomfield.

Grand Junction Brings Its Own Eight-Win Season

Grand Junction arrives in Johnstown having won four consecutive games since suffering its only defeat of the season, a 21–6 loss to Loveland on September 24.

The Tigers have since defeated Northridge, Greeley West, Longmont, and Poudre. Their most recent victory came October 22, when they shut out Poudre 39–0.

Grand Junction has scored 306 points through nine games and recorded three shutouts this season. The Tigers are ranked No. 6 in the October 27 CHSAA Class 5A rankings, setting up a matchup between two highly ranked Colorado programs.

Senior running back Elias Morgan has been among Grand Junction’s offensive contributors. According to KJCT’s October 22 game report, Morgan scored twice against Poudre, including a touchdown run in which he broke multiple tackles near the goal line.

The Tigers’ most competitive recent victory came against Longmont on October 16. Grand Junction defeated the Trojans 37–31 in a game that featured 141 rushing yards and four touchdowns from Morgan, according to MaxPreps.

Conference Championship and Playoff Implications

Friday’s game provides Roosevelt an opportunity to finish conference play undefeated and claim the Northern League championship outright.

Following Roosevelt’s October 23 victory over Frederick, head coach Lane Wasinger discussed the significance of the opportunity with Denver Sports Media.

“A league championship would mean a lot to this group because it’s been a minute since we’ve won one,” Wasinger told reporter Oliver Hayes in an October 26 article.

The matchup also comes as both programs prepare for postseason competition. Roosevelt enters the final week of the regular season atop the CHSAA Class 4A rankings, while Grand Junction holds a top-10 position in Class 5A.

Although Friday’s result could influence postseason positioning, official playoff matchups and seeding remain to be determined. Roosevelt’s first-round opponent has not yet been announced.
