Johnstown Town Council unanimously approved a 70-foot wireless communications tower near Bella Ridge Golf Course on Sept. 9, clearing the way for a new facility designed to resemble a pine tree. Council approved the Lucky Star Monopine project on a 5-0 vote, with council members Berg and Young absent.
The facility will be developed by Anthemnet Inc. on property owned by Bella Ridge Golf LLC, generally north of County Road 42 and west of Colorado Boulevard. The tower will use a “monopine” design, incorporating artificial branches and camouflage intended to reduce its visual impact compared with a conventional telecommunications pole.
Ground equipment associated with the tower will be screened by fencing and landscaping included in the approved plans. Town staff also noted that the tower would be located more than 250 feet from future residential land uses.
Verizon is currently the only identified carrier for the facility, but the tower could accommodate additional wireless providers in the future. That could allow multiple carriers to use the same structure instead of requiring separate towers for each provider.
Town planning documents say the project is intended to improve wireless coverage in the area. Because the property is zoned Planned Unit Development-Mixed Use, the proposal required approval through Johnstown’s Use by Special Review process.
The Johnstown Planning and Zoning Commission reviewed the project during an Aug. 12 public hearing and recommended approval before it advanced to Town Council. Town staff determined that the proposal met Johnstown’s land-use approval criteria and was compatible with existing and anticipated development in the surrounding area.
Under Resolution 2026-40, Anthemnet must obtain required building permits and comply with applicable town regulations, as well as Federal Communications Commission and Federal Aviation Administration requirements.
